Last week, while looking through first-quarter sales reports, we noticed something interesting. After years of comfortably being the second most popular full-size truck, the Chevrolet Silverado had slipped into third place. At least for now, Ram is in second behind the Ford F-Series. But then we took a look at midsize truck sales and noticed something even more surprising. Even though the Ford Ranger is brand new, the ancient Nissan Frontier outsold it by a huge margin.
In fact, Nissan sold more than twice as many Frontiers as Ford sold Rangers. That’s 20,221 Frontiers versus 9,421 Rangers, to be exact. The Frontier is still way behind the 58,183 Toyota Tacomas and 33,494 Chevrolet Colorados that sold in Q1, but considering how old it is, that’s seriously impressive. And based on what we’ve seen, it’s not because Nissan is offering huge incentives, either. The 15-year-old Frontier is just popular.
